Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge

The fifth installment of fan favourite Pirates of the Caribbean is here. It comes on the tales of its predecessor Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which frankly was not a hit but a miss.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (also known as Dead Men Tell No Tales) hits our screens again with Johnny Depp at the helm once again.  A down on his luck Captain Jack Sparrow feels the winds blowing the wrong way when deadly undead ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle. Jacks only hope of survival lies in seeking the legendary Trident of Poseidon, following a map that no man can read. In order to find it he must form an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British Navy.

WARNING: Below may contain some spoilers.

Salazar’s Revenge tried to capture the formula used in the first three Pirates films with the dynamic between three main characters. A dynamic that was magical with Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Capt. Jack Sparrow is supplied with a new pair of Pretty, attracted to each other protagonists. Henry Turner, a young adventurer, played by Brenton Thwaites is the son of Bloom and Knightley’s characters. His love interest, Carina Smyth, an astrologer and horologist is played by Kaya Scodelario. These characters seem so similar to us as once again the formula used to create Will and Elizabeth turner is used to create Carina Smyth and Henry Turner. Henry is very much his father’s son. He will stop at nothing to find the Trident in order to save his father from the curse he gained in the third film. Carina Smyth is very similar to Keira Knightley’s character. She will not conform to what the times expect of  a women and will fight to ends of the earth for what she believes in.

When co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom abandoned the franchise after the third film it was a nice surprise to realise that they were back again if only for three scenes. The tale surrounds the two characters and how to gain the Trident of Poseidon in order to save Bloom’s character from a curse but they garner very little screen time.

The Trident of Poseidon is said to break all curses at sea. This leaves the question, where do we go from here?  The end of Salazar’s Revenge gives the impression that there will be another film and Bloom and Knightley will be signing on for it but with Javier Bardem’s Salazar making the statement in the final battle “This is where the tale ends” will there be another Pirates film.

The first Pirates film was a huge success, largely due to Johnny Depp’s original performance as the drunk Captain Jack Sparrow. However the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides left fans wondering what had happened. It was a half-hearted after thought for the Pirates trilogy. Salazar’s Revenge gives the Disney Trilogy the reboot that it needed.
